The History of New Orleans

In 1762 and 1763 France signed treaties ceding Louisiana to Spain. For 40 years New Orleans was a Spanish city. The city was ravaged by fires in 1788 and 1794 and rebuilt in brick with buildings and a cathedral that still stand today. In 1803 Louisiana reverted to the French, who sold it to the United States 20 days later in the Louisiana Purchase. The final battle of the War of 1812 was fought in defense of New Orleans. By 1860 New Orleans had a population of 168,000. With such a huge rise in population outbreaks of yellow fever continues to occur.

In 1905 yellow fever was once again making a reappearance but this time people knew of the role of mosquitoes played in spreading the disease. All standing water was drained, screened, or oiled ending the days of yellow fever.New Orleans jazz was born within its clubs and dance halls. By 1900, the city’s streetcars were electrified, helping the city to grow. In the late 20th-century tourism became an important industry in New Orleans. The New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum was founded in 1972. The Superdome was also opened in 1975.New pump technology allowed for draining of the low-lying swampland located between the city’s riverside crescent and Lake Pontchartrain. New levees and canals meant that many residents could live below sea level.

In August 2005 New Orleans was hit by Hurricane Katrina. Much of the city was flooded and many building were destroyed. Yet, New Orleans gradually recovered from the disaster. People began to return to the city and in 2006. Many residents have since rebuilt their homes and businesses. Today tourism in New Orleans is booming. In 2019 the population of New Orleans was 390,000. New Orleans is a soft after vacation spot. With any attractions and sights for tourists to enjoy and experience.

  • New Orleans was the place where Voodoo was initially introduced in the United States and was home to Marie Laveau, one of the most prominent figures of New Orleans. She was known as the Voodoo Queen back in the 1800s.

  • Tombs are located above the ground in New Orleans because of the high water table.
