Tahitians have a vibrant and rich culture that they’ve inherited from their ancient ancestors. Weaving and woodcarving artistry has been passed down from generations. The people of Tahiti love to celebrate customs through artwork, singing, and dance. Many islanders compete each year during festivals, showing off their skills.
Music and dance are an important part of life on the island. Tahitian music can be best described as fast tribal rhythms played on wooden drums. Tahitian dance is a vital part of the culture and was once linked to all aspects of life. The dances consist of fast hip shaking motions and have become a captivating art form on the island.
Another integral part of Tahitian culture is tattooing. Tattooing was an ancient art form and nearly all ancient Polynesians were tattooed. For men each tattoo was a badge of honor as they endured months of agony to complete the tattoos. In recent times the tattoo process has greatly improved but the designs and their meanings remain the same.
The official languages of Tahiti are Tahitian and French. English is also widely understood because of tourism. Tahitians believe in mana, a spiritual life force energy and healing power the flows into the universe. They have a carefree attitude, and their philosophy is Aita pea pea. Which means not to worry.
