The Ancient History of Englsih Mastiffs

Mastiffs have existed since 2200 BC. They can be seen in ancient images on Babylonian relics. They were often referred to as dog-like beasts in the past acquiring the name of Molossus. It is not known if these giant dogs were originally bred for their size or if they evolved on their own. During ancient times these dogs were commonly used in war by the Romans and other cultures. Mastiffs were also used as guardians for livestock and homes, protecting them from bears and other wildlife.

The British History of English Mastiffs

In 500 BC the British acquired the Molossus dogs from Central Asia. The British were fascinated by the breed’s massive size and strength. In the early 1400’s, the British often used this breed in organized fights with other animals such as bears. The Matiff was also used as a war dog due to their strength and protective nature. In 1415, Sir Peer Legh was wounded in the Battle of Agincourt. His mastiff stood ground for several hours to protect him during the battle. The first record of the original breed’s name Molossus being translated to Mastiff is 1465. The modern breed we see today was established in the 1880s. By the 1800’s they were primarily used as guard dogs and companions, considering their loyal and protective behavior towards their owners.
