Personality Traits
English Mastiffs are extremely smart and love attention. They are known for being obedient dogs that enjoy lounging around. The AKC describes the breed as "A combination of grandeur and good nature, courage and docility.”. English Mastiffs are calm dogs and make great family pets. They also get along well with children and other pets. Mastiffs form a fierce bond with their owner and make wonderful companions. They are very loving and will often think they are lap dogs. A Mastiff will protect its owner if they are in danger. They are unlikely to attack without extreme provocation but will make it clear to any intruders that his family is off limits.
Socialization
English Mastiffs often adore their family members, but they are often wary of strangers. Because of this it is very important to socialize them from a young age. Mastiffs are very protective of their home and family members. Mastiffs need to learn visitors are not a threat by being around house guest from an early age. It is also recommended for families with children who have a Mastiff puppy to have it watch the children playing. Children’s playtime often gets rough and English Mastiffs need to be able to difference between play and threat.
