English Mastiffs are a large breed of dog. That are distinguished by their enormous size, massive heads, and short coats. English Mastiffs are descendants of an ancient dog breed, with lineage going all the way back to 2500BC. Mastiffs extremely powerful and were often used as guard or war dogs in the past because of their massive size and protective nature. Today Mastiffs are called gentle giants. English Mastiffs are very even-tempered, patient, and highly trainable. They are known to protect their family and territory.

Caring for an English Mastiff

Exercise- Mastiffs are generally lazy dogs. However, regular excise will help keep them healthy. Playing in the backyard or going for a short walk will help to keep them fit. English Mastiffs should avoid stairs, long walks, and jumping from high heights.

Training- Early training and socialization are a must for English Mastiffs. Short training classes are recommended so they do not lose focus and get bored. It is also suggested to not use a loud voice with them. They are excellent at reading expressions and yelling may hurt their feelings. Treat them with love and respect and they should excel in training.

Grooming- English Mastiffs have a low maintenance coat and do not require much grooming. Their coat should be brushed at least once a week. Any face wrinkles should be wiped clean often to avoid bacteria growth. They should be bathed infrequently and have their nails trimmed every few weeks.

Living Environment- English Mastiffs do not require a large living space because they’re not very active. As long as they are given sufficient amount of exercise, they will do well in a small home.
